Overview

The highlight of this trek is the Annapurna Sanctuary, or amphitheatre. The arrival at the Sanctuary’s ‘gate’ is spectacular, passing between the peaks of Machapuchre and Hiumchui. It is here that we’ll be rewarded with superb views of the mountains, including the ‘fishtail mountain’, Machhapuchre.

The way up to the base camp, follows the Modi Khola Valley through forests of oak, bamboo and rhododendron, and passes many local Gurung villages.

More recently, the Annapurna Sanctuary has become a popular trekking destination. This is because it’s easily accessible from Pokhara and offers tremendous potential for scenic walks and alpine exploration, in a splendid Himalayan setting. The ring of mountains that forms the rim of the Annapurna Sanctuary includes no fewer than eight of mountains of more than 7,000 metres, including Annapurna South (7,273m), Fang (7,647m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Gangapurna (7,454m) and Annapurna III (7,555m). The ring is completed by the peerless Macchapuchre, itself only seven metres short of the magical 7,000 meters.
