Overview

Mera is considered to be one of highest Nepal’s permitted trekking peaks and dominates the hillside between the wild valleys of the Hinku and Hongu Drangkas.

Mera peak offers the chance to venture into a yet unspoiled region of Nepal as both the Hongu and Hinku valleys remain uninhabited.

The upper Hongu basin is truly a mountain wilderness, a place of massive moraines, glacial lakes and spectacular peaks that include Charmlang and Baruntse. Additionally, it offers some of the most amazing mountain landscape, pristine forest, and high altitude climbing in the world.

We start this trip with a flight into Lukla (2,800m). From there it is a six-day trek, with acclimatization days to keep us fit as the altitude increases. We will go through some of Nepal’s most pristine rhododendron, oak, silver fir and birch forests, past beautiful alpine lakes, and finally up to the foot of Mera glacier where well establish BC. We will set up two more high camps, the first one, over 300m above BC, on the Mera glacier; the second one, after crossing Mera’s crevasse field at 5,800m. From here it is a steady and steep climb to reach the summit, with outstanding views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu to the East; Everest and Lhotse to the North: and Ama Dablam and Cho Oyu to the West.

As part of the program, we will also hold a 3-day basic glacier course before ascending to the top of Mera peak. This will be during the acclimatising time. The course will consist of: rope work, crampon on ice, snow and ice anchorage, glacier exploring, crevasse rescue training and ice climbing.
